Microsoft has announced a major development in its artificial intelligence strategy with the launch of its in-house AI accelerator chip, the Maia 200, just days before releasing its quarterly earnings. This move underscores the company’s push to control more of the technology stack behind its cloud-based AI services and reduce its reliance on external semiconductor suppliers.
The Maia 200 is designed specifically for AI inference workloads — the computing tasks needed to run trained machine-learning models — and is built on a state-of-the-art 3-nanometer process. According to Microsoft, the chip delivers significantly improved performance and efficiency compared with previous systems and some competing hardware from other cloud providers, offering up to 30 % better performance per dollar. It contains over 140 billion transistors and supports high-bandwidth memory, enabling faster AI operations at lower operating costs.
Microsoft says the Maia 200 is already being deployed in its Azure data center in Iowa, with plans to expand to additional regions. The company also previewed a new software development kit to help developers optimize AI models for the Maia platform.
The launch marks a strategic shift for Microsoft as it moves beyond being mainly a customer of third-party chips toward designing custom silicon tailored for its own large-scale AI infrastructure. This comes at a time when major cloud companies, including Amazon and Google, are also developing their own AI chips to compete with traditional GPU vendors.
